Pool Return

Hi Folks

The pool sessions will restart on the 6th of January 2008 at 1:30pm. Lectures will be on before the pool at the normal time.

I need to get subs in asap. If you haven't paid you subs fully then you won't be allowed to use scuba in the pool as you won't be registered with CFT and therefore won't be covered by insurance. CFT will not register any member unless they have your date of birth and your medical date.

New members must also fill out the club membership form. They are available from me at the pool or just drop me an email at hynescian@eircom.net

Also no member can dive or attend any cft course until they have been registered.

So as of the 1st of January only fully registered members will be allowed partake in any club diving activities.

Any queries then just ask me.

Fees 2007-2008

Subscriptions

The following subscriptions will apply for the coming year:

Member Type Cost in Euros

Adult Diver €230
Student Diver €150
Senior Snorkeler € 100
Junior Snorkeler € 70
Associate Member € 25

Family membership will be adjusted accordingly.

As always, the above fees need to be paid on or before 1st January 2008. If you are not
fully paid up at this point then you are not covered to dive, use any club equipment or partake in training in the pool.

Fees will continue to be accepted after 1st January 2008. If however you pay after the 31st of March 2008 you will be obliged to pay an additional late fee of €50. This late fee is reduced to €25 for student divers.

Dive Fees

It was decided at the AGM to revise the system by which divers pay for their dives. The €10 ‘pay as you dive’ fee is no longer an option. Instead any adult member wishing to dive must pay a dive fee of €100. This fee will cover all your dives for the season. The fee must be paid before you commence diving for the season.

This fee will not apply to student divers and divers under 18. Student divers and divers under 18 years of age will continue to dive for free.

Search and Recovery
Training is happening every weekend. Any member is welcome to come along and participate in the training. The only pre-requisite is that you have to be a club diver or higher to dive. The S/R team are also changing things a bit this year with Nitrox now being used instead of Air. Contact Damien Mellet for any S/R details.

Christmas Social
The Christmas social is being organised at the moment. At the time of printing the date and venue were awaiting confirmation. A club text will be circulated and notices at the pool when these are confirmed.

Member of the year 2007

Many thanks to all who voted in the recent member of the year poll. There were 9 nominees in all but the overall winner was Ger Loughnane. Well done Ger.

As always please check our website for regular club updates and remember that club take place on the first Wednesday of every month in the clubhouse at 8pm sharp. These meetings provide club members with an opportunity to have a say in the running of the club. There has been a low turnout lately at these meetings. In fact the October Monthly meeting had to be cancelled as only 4 club members turned up. Consequently meetings all club members are being encouraged to attend these meetings.

Club Member of the Year

The 2007 Club Member of the year as voted by the members is Ger Loughnane. Ger has played an integral role within the club in the time he has spent in the club. He has served as both Chairman and Training Officer and had given up a huge amount of time and energy to devote to the club. He is a well deserving Member of the year and he now goes forward as the clubs nomination for National Club Member of the year 2007 at the forth coming CFT AGM.

Well done Ger, well deserved.

Fundraising events

2 funraising events are to happen in the next few weeks. On November 24th the club are having a collection at the Golden Island Shopping Centre.

On November 28th, 29th and Dec 1st there is a bag packing fundraiser in Dunnes Stores Montree in aid of the club.

Both of the above events are a major source of income for the club and need to be well supported.

The fundraising committee has allocated a timeslot for every member of the club. In order to find out your time please contact Pauric on 0872730412.

It is essential that all club members do their share of fundraising. There is over 100 members in the club yet its the same 10 or 15 members who do all the fundraising. These fundraising events help to KEEP SUBS LOW.

AGM

Hi Folks

At the recent AGM a number of important things were agreed on.

The late fee date is the 31st of March 2008. And adult diver paying after this date will incur a 50 euro late fee. Student Divers will incur a 25 euro late fee.

Dive Fees

The club has scrapped both the pre-pay option and the pay as you dive option. There will now be a flat fee of 100 euros per year for dive fees and will apply to all Adult Divers. It will be payable before your first dive weekend. Student divers remain free to dive. This decision was taken by a vote and was agreed by 95% of the present members at the meeting.

Kilmore Quay - 8th and 9th September

The weather was perfect for the weekend in
Kilmore Quay, this is a small fishing village which is situated North of the Saltee Islands. With small numbers from Athlone SAC showing interest, I invited Mullingar SAC to join us. It was the first time that Mullingar SAC had dived this part of Ireland. On Saturday the Mullingar divers dived the lee side of ConnigMor rock and had the usual group of curious seals playing with them on the dive. The afternoon dive was on the wreck of the Girl Arleen, this is a fishing trawler lying at 30Metres which is covered in codling. Jim Cambell, Mono McDonald, Brian Duffy and I, joined Mullingar on their boat for this dive. Visibility was good apart from all the codling getting in the way.
The only other wreck I have encountered with as much fish on it is the Manchester Merchant off Inch Beach in Dingle. Food and drinks were had in the lovely Kehoes pub on Saturday night, this is a gorgeous spot with lots of maritime and diving memorabilia covering the walls and ceiling. On Sunday morning the first dive was on the wreck of the Idaho which is at 40Metres. Brian Duffy, Mono McDonald and some of the Mullingar divers dived this (the Idaho is shown above) . Eddie O Donnell joined us for the second dive which was the Girl Arleen again at the request of all the divers present. This was Eddies first wreck dive and he loved it. All in all a very good weekend was had by all. I got the GPS numbers for another trawler lying at 30Metres off Hook Head which comes highly recommended by Harry Hannon of Waterford SAC and hopeful we will get a chance to dive it before the season is over. Thanks to Jim Cambell and his son David for driving the club van and boat down to Kilmore.
Regards, Ger Craven.

St. Johns Point 18th and 19th August

John Dory

A good weekends diving was had by those who travelled to St. Johns Point in Donegal. The weather was very favourable for us, with calm seas and the rain holding off.Robbie West drove the club van down, thanks to Robbie for that. He and Tony Duigan made the most of the conditions with three dives each on Saturday, Yash Agrawal turned up for the last dive with the boys. While myself, Noel Cleary, Michael Touhey and Dominic Kirf did two dives. We saw a large John Dory on the dive which is a fish I have rarely seen while diving. We over nighted in Killybegs where Aiden Henry, Peter Chatterton and Derry McMahon joined us and large amounts of the black stuff was had in the Harbour Bar. Tony Duigan came out a clear winner in this event!!!On Sunday we had some lovely dives while some testing and training was been done. Thanks to Eddie O Donnell who took all the dive details for me. Finally congratulations to Tony Duigan on passing his 1* open water tests.

The diver had been exploring wartime wrecks more than 20 kilometres off the Donegal coast yesterday afternoon.

The search continued today with a body being discovered on the seabed at 2.30 this afternoon.

The British flag, Honk Kong registered ore/bulk/oil motor vessel Kowloon Bridge, which was built in 1973 as a sister ship to the ill-fated Derbyshire which disappeared off the coast of Japan in September, 1980, herself also became a total loss in November, 1986 when she was wrecked off the southern coast of Ireland.

The Kowloon Bridge was on a voyage from St. Lawrence River port of seven Islands, Quebec, from where she started on 7/11/86 bond for the River Clyde terminal of Hunterston, loaded with a cargo of 160,000 tons of iron ore consigned to British Steel Corporation. However, en route she had to seek shelter in Bantry Bay to effect repairs to deck cracks sustained during heavy Atlantic weather. Then, after having lost her standard anchor in a heavy swell on 22/11/86, she sailed out of Bantry bay but then lost her steerage and began to drift in continuing heavy seas. Due to the dangerous nature of the situation, the 28 man crew decided to abandon ship, being winched to safety by helicopters in mountainous seas. The helpless vessel was then driven aground in gale-force winds on Stag Rock, near Baltimore, Co. Cork. Her 1200 tons of bunker fuel began to leak, causing a serious pollution problem to nearby coves and beaches. Despite the joint efforts of two of the world’s top salvage companies, Smit & Wijsmuller, the wrecked Kowloon Bridge could not be refloated and, when she broke her back on the rocks, all salvage attempts were abandoned. She was left to the elements to pound to pieces. The hull and machinery insurance was £8.4m, while the value of the lost ore was £2.7m.

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. - Lightning struck a diver's oxygen tank

The 36-year-old man was diving with three others Sunday off a boat near Deerfield Beach, about 40 miles north of Miami. He had surfaced about 30 feet from the boat when lightning struck his tank, said Deerfield Beach Fire Chief Gary Fernaays.

The other divers struggled to get the man back into the boat and radioed for help, Fernaays said. The victim, whose name was not immediately released, was rushed to the beach, where a rescue crew gave him CPR. He was later pronounced dead at North Broward Medical Center in Pompano

Kilkee - Bank Holiday

The club travelled to kilkee for the may weekend. The week leading up to it, the weather was terrific, but unfortunately for us the weekend turned out to be a wash out. But bad weather has never really stopped Athlone SAC from putting to the water, and on Saturday we dived Newfound out. Saturday the trainees were doing the required snorkels but on Sunday they got there first open water dive from the slip at kilkee. The Vis was crap but our eager trainees spent the best part of an hour in it. The only thing that can be said at this stage to any trainee who may be reading this is: it can only get better..
After the dive we dropped a new mooring for the Athlone diver, as our previous one was washed up on shore in the bad weather over the winter. Sunday evening the wind calmed a bit and two of our trainees dived newfound out, spotting crawfish, lobsters, and a big conger. We decided to lift the boat afterwards as Sunday night was promised to be particularly bad.
We were woke on Monday morning with the wind and rain beating against the side of the van and we decided to call diving off, till next weekend, where its Kilkee again. Finally id like to thank everyone who helped out with the weekend, and thanks to Matt for bringing the van and boat down..Till next week.

Search and Recovery Update

Robbie West, Ger Craven and Michael White dived on Saturday.
We had been asked to search for the cover of an outboard that the
Athlone Boat Club lost. Full face masks were used, Michael found the cover
on our first dive. The next two dives done were under the pontoons in front of the
clubhouse. Michael brought his camera to get some underwater footage.
SAR members should use any opportunity they get to practice with
the full face masks.

SAR Training Update Saturday 6th December

Colm O'Reilly & Declan Walsh during a search & recovery training exercise today, Colm & Declan were the guides for the divers below navigating them whilst the divers carried out a line search on the river bed.

Thanks to all who turned up on Saturday, the morning started at 9.30am and finished at a reasonable 1pm.
Three line searches were done, initially there was difficulty in keeping the line straight and running at right angle to the river bank, this was due to the fast flow and currents going under the bridges. Different ideas were tried and on the third run all went to plan. The RDO (regional diving officer) Brendan Flanagan had asked to take part in the training and afterwards had high praise for the Athlone SAR for its commitment and high standards. Declan Walsh and Colm O Reilly were rope tenders, Brendan Flanagan and Niall McHugh were the Anchor divers, Ciaran Kelly, Ollie Fallon, June Robbins and Cian Hynes were the divers on the line. Steward McMickan was coxan with Peter Chatterton assisting. Training continues every Saturday at 9.30.

Athlone Search & Recovery Training Update

The SAR team trained last Saturday the 30th of December. The training concentrated on line searches in fast flowing water, with particular attention to quick deployment of the dive team and collection after the dive. The day was very successful, three line searches were done and all who took part enjoyed the experience. More importantly things were learned and improved on. Thanks to our DO Liam Sheringham for doing coxan with John Kenny assisting and Robbie West, Cian Hynes, Declan Walsh, Stewart McMickan, Ollie Fallon and Niall McHugh for doing the practical work. Apologies were given from June Robbins, Colm O Reilly and Peter Chatterton who were unable to attend. Members of the SAR team please note that your dive certificate last two years and you must turn up and practice the different search methods over the coming months. This is for your own safety. Over the coming weeks, solo dive training will be done along the areas around the weir such as the eel lines and the lough gates.

SAR search for lost shotgun

On the 16th of December members of the Athlone Search & Recovery team searched for a lost shotgun on the request of the owner. The owner of the shotgun had fallen in and was unsure of the area in which he lost the gun. Cian Hynes, Stewart McMickan, Colm O Reilly and Ger Craven searched using the circular search method with the aid of a metal detector.
Liam Sheringham did coxan. The searches were unsuccessful with extremely poor visibiliy and a sillty bottom not making things easy. The searches were done in the Barley Harbour area of Lough Ree and we will try again to locate the gun in the coming months. Thanks to those who helped out.
